From Fátima: Coimbra, Lousã Mountain, Schist Villages

Itinerary Description

Begin your journey with a morning departure from Fátima toward Coimbra, the legendary City of Students. Upon arrival, explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of the University of Coimbra, walking through the medieval streets of the Alta district where Portuguese academic traditions remain alive today.

Dive into the city's Romanesque architecture and the historic Santa Cruz Monastery, providing a comprehensive look at the foundation of Portuguese culture.

Next, head to the lush landscapes of Serra da Lousã. The first mountain stop is the 11th-century Lousã Castle, a mystical fortress tucked into a deep valley adjacent to the Ermida da Nossa Senhora da Piedade. This location offers a striking visual contrast between ancient stone fortifications and the natural beauty of the riverside sanctuaries and mountain pools.

Dedicate the afternoon to the "Aldeias de Xisto," Portugal’s hidden schist villages. In Talasnal, the most iconic of these hamlets, wander through narrow alleys of dark stone and wood that offer breathtaking panoramic views of the mountain range.

Continue to the artistic village of Cerdeira, a beautifully restored community where traditional schist architecture serves as a sanctuary for international creativity and craftsmanship. Before returning back to Fátima, stop by a magnificent viewpoint overlooking the Lousã mountains and schist villages.
